Siding With the Truth of God

In a world of false information and fake news, it sometimes feels overwhelming to find the truth and believe in it over all else. It becomes increasingly difficult when you believe in truths that many do not, leaving you looking for answers and direction in ways that most of society doesn’t. How many times have you found yourself asking God to reveal His truths, when it feels like the “beliefs” of this world are louder than God’s?

There is something so beautiful about our thoughts. I know that for many of us who get stuck in our heads, we don’t see much beauty in it when we end up over-processing a situation or find ourselves confused by whatever it is that’s on our mind. We have the power to share our thoughts with others or to hold tight to them. The only other one who knows our thoughts in their pure and real form is God, and I would argue that He knows them better than we do. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard someone pray or have said this prayer myself; “God you know how I feel more than I do. Please provide clarity and mindfulness that rests in your peace and truth.”

Now, the big question is, are we holding onto the right thoughts or are we giving in to the ones God is desperately trying to get us to let go of?

If it is not helpful, if it is not positive, and if it does not align with God’s word then give it to Him.

We need to begin to consider negative thoughts as not our own but instead as statements that we can choose to either partner with or not. Taking the negative thoughts captive and replacing them with positive ones from God is one of the hardest things to do, especially when we do not believe in the words that we speak over ourselves. But, even if we don’t believe in these truths now, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t great power in taking the negative thoughts and horrible lies and giving them to God. Once God has them, He can do with them what He will. By distancing ourselves from the harsh thoughts that come, we can begin to examine them, process them, and hand them over for God to handle, instead of keeping them inside and adding them to our confusion.

How do we align with the truths of God, especially when we struggle to believe them because of a lack of self-worth, past circumstances, or people in our lives who have contributed to the hurt and added fuel to the fire of untruth? The Bible allows us to see the heart of God in action, but sometimes we can’t always pull out our Bible to dig through the scriptures. God gave us a counselor to bring the Spirit of Truth wherever and whenever we need it. We need to make room and welcome Him in.

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” – John 14:16-17

I recently read, “Good Morning Holy Spirit” by Benny Hinn. Now, I was skeptical; I have to admit. I very rarely read books about God or Christianity as I am so afraid of being fed incorrect theology, but I gave this one a chance because it came highly recommended.

The biggest revelation from this book for me was that the Holy Spirit has a personality. He longs to be with us and reveal the goodness of God, but if He does not feel welcome, He will leave. I began to mourn this as I thought of the many times that I ignored or judged the Holy Spirit because I thought He had somehow forgotten me and left me behind to “deal with” myself. All I had to say, however, was, “Holy Spirit, you are welcome here. Please be with me.”

Since beginning to say those words, especially when the awful thoughts and lies of this world tried to retake root, God’s truths were revealed. You are not less than. You are not unworthy of goodness. You are so loved by the only one whose love matters most. And slowly, through these truths replacing the lies, God has revealed His heart in how filled with love it is for us, but also how sad it is when we believe that we are anything less than His child.

Every day we have the choice to believe that God is good and whatever we are walking through will be turned into a beautiful testimony. To welcome in the beauty of God’s hand in our lives, we need to take the false thoughts captive and replace them with God’s incredible views and truths about us instead. Even if it feels like you are barely able to hand it over to God, keep doing it. Eventually, it will get easier, and in every moment God will reveal another part of His heart to you.

Side with God for He is faithful, just, and good. He is also filled with an everlasting love that can’t even be explained by this world- it can only be shown by Him.
